PEACOCKS AMONG THE RUINS

Timorous Beasties, two of Scotland’s best known interior designers, have co-curated this fascinating new exhibition looking at the history of the use of the natural world in interior design. Combining a selection of material gathered from historical archives with work by well known contemporary designers from around the globe this exhibition has been specially conceived by Dundee Contemporary Arts in collaboration with Timorous Beasties as part of the Six Cities Design Festival, Scotland’s first international festival of design.
Peacocks Among The Ruins takes its title from a British 18th century Toile de Jouy, ‘The Peacock in the ruins’. This fabric encapsulates the theme of the exhibition, illustrating the way in which the flora and fauna of our natural environment has been consistently utilised to create a back drop within the home. Bringing together examples of historical and contemporary wallpaper, textiles and objects including Timorous Beasties’ own designs, the exhibition offers a glimpse at their entirely partial and slightly eccentric interpretation of the history of interior design. The design studio Timorous Beasties http://www.timorousbeasties.com was founded in Glasgow in 1990 by Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons who met when studying Textile design at Glasgow School of Art. They opened their first shop on Glasgow’s Great Western Road in 2004 and were short listed in 2005 for UK designer of the year. As well as designing their own collections of wallpaper and fabric they have also produced special commissions for Phillip Treacy hats and designed interiors for Arches Theatre in Glasgow and 50 Piccadilly, a London casino, amongst others.
