Hundreds of Scotland’s most aspiring and talented young scientists and engineers showcased their inventions and creations at the first ever Big Bang Scotland The one-day Fair, Scotland’s first Big Bang, will highlight an impressive array of over 70 innovations, inventions and investigations underpinned by Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Around 240 pupils from over 30 schools will compete at the University of Abertay Dundee event, either as individuals or in teams, with judges including Heather ‘the Weather’ Reid and Scotland’s Chief Scientific Adviser Professor Anne Glover. Creations and inventions to be on show will include a recycling bin for classrooms, decorative garden gate, gaming chair, dirt bike transporter, ground source heat pump for heating outdoor swimming pools and an inventive way of shielding road accidents from passers-by. Meanwhile, investigative projects being showcased will range from one exploring the power of waves to the grip of different shoes and others focusing on the nutritional intake of vegans, stain removal, food labelling, shampoos and whether girls or boys have a better sense of smell. The pupils will be vying for a range of prestigious awards including nomination to the national event the following year and three new prizes sponsored by the Scottish Government. The national contest was open to pupils aged 11 to 19, with entrants spanning the length and breadth of Scotland, some of whom required to spend up to 80 hours on their projects. The event will also be open to visiting schools and other interested parties. A host of exciting workshops and shows will also be on offer to illustrate the fun, excitement and relevance of science including ‘Bend it like Beckham’ arguing that Beckham is a ‘scientific genius’ and a challenge to build a giant tetrahedron, explore a virtual reality lab and take part in an experiment comparing cheap and expensive washing up liquids. The Big Bang Scotland is being organised by TechFest-SetPoint and funded by the Scottish Government, British Science Association, Young Engineers and The Big Bang Education Limited.
